Corosha - Hierba Buena

Reserve: Hierba Buena - Allpayacu
Location: Corosha, Amazonas
Size: 2000 ha
Elevation: 1900 - 2300 m.a.s.l.

The rural community of Corosha has created a new large conservation area that was just recently formally recognized by the government! They formed the area with help from NPC, Sociedad Peruana de Derecho Ambiental  the Natural History Museum of the University of San Marcos, the Bongará office of tourism, and the NGO Yunkawasi.

Visit this area to support their conservation efforts, and experience the mosaic of unique vegetation, including forests, very rare Jalca habitat (also known as Páramo), and incredible diversity of orchids (Orchidaceae) and tree ferns (Cyatheaceae). It is home to several endangered species that can only be seen in this region, such as the critically endangered Yellow-tailed woolly monkey (Oreonax flavicauda), endangered Owl monkey (Aotus miconax), and vulnerable Hairy long-nosed armadillo (Dasypus pilosus). The vulnerable Andean Spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), Puma (Puma concolor), nocturnal Pacarana (Dinomys branickii), and Mountain paca (Cuniculus taczanowskii) also live in the area!

An impressive 138 species of birds have been recorded in Corosha’s community conservation area, including four species endemic to montane forests of Peru; the Pale-billed antpitta (Grallaria carriker), Rusty-tinged antpitta (Grallaria przewalskii), Inca flycatcher (Leptopogon taczanowskii), and the Golden-faced Tyrannulet (Zimmerius viridiflavus) are of special conservation interest. You can also see the Emerald Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus prasinu), Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan (Andigena hypoglauca), and the White-capped dipper (Cinclus leucocephalus). In addition to the extraordinary biodiversity of the forests, several beautiful natural sites and interesting community facilities are also open to visitors, such as the Teodomina Lagoon, metal caves, sugercane processing, mini hydroelectric plant, and several restaurants where you can try typical local cuisine! Staying in the small town of Corosha, with just 680 people, allows you to gain a very authentic experience by getting to know the friendly and welcoming people living in the jungles of Northern Peru!
