The two communities of Ricardo Palma and Bagazan, both located in the District of Pachiza in the Departmnet of San Martín, Peru, are each currently working to create their own community run conservation concessions. Come visit these areas to help support their efforts to protect the incredible biodiversity in the lowland tropical forests around their villages!

A wealth of magnificent bird species can be found in these new conservation areas, such as the Blue-headed Parrot, Vermiculated Screech Owl, White-necked Jacobin, Golden-collared Toucanet, Ivory-billed Aracari, Paradise Tanager, White-throated Toucan, and Blue-crowned Motmot. The Huallaga Tanager (Ramphocelus melanogaster) and Mishana Tyrannulet (Zimmerius villarejoi) endemics can only be found in this region, and several species are near-threatened or vulnerable, such as the Wattled Guan (Aburria aburri), Fiery-throated Fruiteater (Pipreola chlorolepidota), and Razor-billed Curassow (Mitu tuberosum). At least 6 primate species can be found across these two reserves, including the San Martín Titi Monkey (Callicebus oenanthe), Red Howler Monkey (Alouatta seniculus), Saddleback Tamarin (Saguinus fuscicolis), Black-headed Night Monkey (Aotus nigriceps), Spider Monkey (Ateles sp.), and Capuchin Monkey (Cebus sp.). The San Martín Titi monkey is critically endangered for extinction and this is one of the very few areas where it can be seen.


A number of other fascinating animals live in these reserves, such as several wild cat species (Jaguarundi – Felis yagouaroundi, Cougar – Puma concolor, & Jaguar – Panthera onca), Bushy-tailed Olingo (Bassaricyon gabbii), Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), Giant Armadillo (Priodontes maximus), Bush Dog (Speothos vanaticus), Bicolored-spined Porcupine (Coendou bicolor), Kinkajou (Potos flavus), South American Coati (Nasua nasua), and Peccary (Tayassu sp.). Additionally, in the Ricardo Palma Reserve, the Andean White-eared Opossum (Didelphis pernigra) Brown-throated Sloth (Bradypus variegatus), and Pygmy Anteater (Cyclopes didactylus) have been spotted. Bagazan is also home to the Ocelot(Leopardus pardalis), Lowland Tapir (Tapirus terrestris), Black Agouti (Dasyprocta fuliginosa), and Amazon Dwarf Squirrel (Microsciurus flaviventer). Come visit to support these communities to continue conserving important tropical forest habitat for many unique species.

The village of Pachiza can be reached by car, taking the route from Tarapoto to Juanjui (2 hours traveling to the south), and then continuing south for an hour on the route to Tocache. We will pre-arrange for you to meet a guide in Pachiza to continue on to either the village of Ricardo Palma or Bagazan (less than an hour of further traveling).
